Fucking Fantastic!
I had set my mind that I could never enjoy audiobooks for reasons I’d rather leave unsaid. I sampled this on a whim and I was blown away.
Everything is so well done and presented. The organisation is lucid. The characterisation and depictions are very succinct. It’s like a resurrection of these long lost stories with fresh new life. Every tragedy and every heartbreak is impressed upon with great effect. The book manages to make you sympathise with all sorts of unfortunate idiots and egotistic despots.
The narration by Stephen Fry is spectacular. His intonation and chummy cadence left me feeling this was a conversation with a dear old friend.
This audiobook was truly an enriching addition to my indolent city bus rides, awkward elevator rides, tiring walks on dusty roads and lazy afternoons after lunch. Greek mythology has been a fascination for me since my formative years. Though faintly familiar with some stories told here, this was an experience I’d gladly relive again.
